Blueprint for success:
This book is a must read for students taking Organizational Behavior classes at Clemens College. Our program helps the student to focus on becoming a general manager in the hospitality industry; a business that has one of the highest employee turnover rates. This book is a concise, no nonsense approach to effectively managing and keeping the most valuable people in your organization. I highly recommend this book for all future bosses.
Defintely not a "how to":
How To Become A Great Boss is a book of rules and anecdotes. It's easy to read - in fact it only took me about 2 hours from cover to cover. All the rules mentioned by Jeffrey J. Fox are appropriate and if applied, would work well for all bosses. Now there's the rub - "if applied". There is no suggestion in How To Become A Great Boss as to how one might apply these rules, merely a description of the rule and an anecdote to illustrate. "How to Become a Great Boss" is unlikely to transform your organization - too many books have been written on this subject to miss something large - but it is a great read nonetheless as it reiterates many of the principles that we often forget about in our daily grind. Very Good Advice:
This book packs a lot of very good leadership advice and maxims into 50 short one to two page chapters. Short is good when it comes to management books as managers don't typically have a lot of time. Much of it is common sense, but regrettably it is not common practice. This book can help with that. All the chapters hold value, but readers will latch on to some more than others.
