Technical Writing Job Sites

Here are links to and comments on some of the most important tech writer job sites. These include some of the large general boards and some small, writer-specific ones. Incidentally, there's an easy way to make sure your resume stays near the top of the electronic pile when a recruiter searches for a writer: make frequent updates, even small ones. It works, because matches are sorted by last update date.

Freelance Work Exchange - Find freelance and work-at-home jobs.

FlipDog.com - A job site we've seen recommended by tech writers. Now apparently part of the Monster site. (See below.)

Monster.com - Post your resume for free on what is probably the biggest job site on the net. In our experience, more recruiters look at resumes on Monster than anywhere else. You can also create automatic agents that will alert you of jobs that match your criteria.

Vault.com - Another job site, where you can post resumes, but also offers career information on lots of jobs and background information on specific companies.

ResumeEdge.com - certified professional resume writers edit and write your resumes and cover letters.

Freelance Writing Jobs - not only tech writing.

Justtechwriterjobs.com - a national list compiled from a whole bunch of external sources, it seems. Not all of them seem to be tech writer positions, despite the name. Also, some are old; hard to imagine that they might not already be filled. But often where there's a need for one writer, there's potential for more.

STC - if you pony up the membership fee, you can see their jobs database. As a workaround for the fiscally challenged, follow the link to the chapter page for your area; most chapters maintain their own jobs database. Local chapters are also a good place to network for jobs.

TECHWR-L - this is a site you should know about as a tech writer. The list itself is a fountain of content from pros (and newbies) you can learn from. Look at a day or two's postings, and you'll quickly see what the current issues are. The link here takes you to their jobs page, which is national and sometimes international.

Craigslist - rather famous in the history of the net, so we understand. Looks like a good number of writing jobs are posted, including some tech writing. There are editions for many cities; navigate to the one you want, look under jobs, then writing/editing. You can also find some relevant listings under software/qa/dba.

Dice.com - another good IT job site, including tech writer positions.
